Take a Salmon Charter Out of Seward for a Fun Filled Day of Alaska Fishing
A salmon charter when the silvers are running ... what a way to spend a day on Alaska's icy waters. A Seward fishing trip makes a fine introduction to Alaska's salmon fishing.
Our arrival in Seward, Alaska, coincided with the days immediately prior to the Seward Silver Salmon Derby. It's one of Seward’s busiest times. The charters are usually booked full. Bob managed to get a spot on the Betty Lou, with Captain Joe Allen. When you've never done something before, it's always nice when it goes well the first time. Bob lucked on in this case. The water was smooth, the fish were biting, and he had a great captain. The Betty Lou is an aluminum bow picker with a rear cabin. It has room for the captain and four passengers. Bob shared his first Seward fishing charter with two other tourists and a military man stationed in Alaska. They fished Resurrection Bay, leaving from Miller's Landing Resort. It was a full day charter. They fished 30 – 180 feet deep. Bob caught three silvers and his limit of six black bass. He estimated the silvers weighed 10 – 15 pounds each. The black bass were a bit smaller, weighing in at 6 – 12 pounds each. They also caught lingcod, small halibut, and sharks on this fishing trip. This fishing trip out of Seward proved to be a good mix of excitement and laid-back fun. The silver salmon fight and are challenging to land. They are also better eating than the black bass. But the bass were biting better. Because it was a mixed charter and they were fishing for a variety of fish, someone on the boat was always catching something. A charter captain can make or break a day on the water. Bob really enjoyed Captain Joe. Not long before this, he'd gone out on a Homer halibut charter. He had a great time there, too, but he said this salmon charter was a lot more relaxed. The focus was on having a fun day, not on catching prize fish. Prices change, but as a guide, expect to pay a couple hundred dollars ($200 - $250) for a salmon charter out of Seward. The price typically includes a daylong charter, fishing equipment and tackle, and fish cleaning.
