Kasilof, AK ... Home of Iditarod Racers, Alaskan Salmon Fishing, and The Merc
Downtown Kasilof, AK is the The Merc and the post office. At least that's what you see at first glance. Look closer, though, and you'll find great Alaskan salmon fishing and services for visitors.
This little community overflows with state recreational areas, guide services, private and public campgrounds, and fishing charters. And, a host of other small businesses. There are a couple Alaskan lodges with bars, restaurants, motels, and RV parks. Kasilof even has a library, located within the Tustamena Elementary School. Back to The Merc. The Merc is officially the Kasiof Mercantile and Rocky's Cafe. But, to locals, it's just "The Merc." It's where you go to pick up a few groceries or rent a video. For a little store in Alaska, they have an unbelievable selection of hot sauces! You can buy fire wood at The Merc. Or, get water. Or, post something on their community bulletin board. Buy gifts. Or, eat at Rocky's. At Rocky's, they want you to know you are in Alaska. Walk in the door, and you weave through the gift shop with Alaska souvenirs and tie-dyed t-shirts, to find a table. You can't miss the colorful mural. And the menu … they name things after Alaskans and give them quirky descriptions. This morning for breakfast, we had the "Lance Mackey," named after the local dog-musher, now famous for winning the Iditarod dog sled race two years in a row. It's the general store. The community well, important since many Kasilof residents don't have running water at home. The gift shop. The local café. The Merc is the visible hub of activity in Kasilof, AK, for both locals and those on Alaskan vacations. Oh, as for the food in the restaurant … order something that comes with salsa. Bob the breakfast cook makes it fresh.
