In Clam Gulch, the Center of Activity is Baker's Clam Shell Lodge

Clam Gulch is the place to go clamming in Alaska. Once you get there, you'll fine Baker's Clam Shell Lodge is the hub of this small town. Food, drink, a place to stay -- and friends.

You might call it a small town. It's one of those places people talk about and say, "If you blink you'll miss it." Two businesses make up the downtown area.

One is the United States Post Office. It's a great little post office. Plenty of parking, even for big rigs like recreational vehicles. If you are lucky enough to be in the area for Christmas, you can mail your packages from there without having to wait in line. It's right on the highway that goes through Clam Gulch, so it is easy to find.

Baker's Clam Shell Lodge is next door to the post office. The Clam Shell is a lodge with restaurant, saloon, and motel. They have hot showers and a Laundromat. Besides that, you can rent clamming shovels. You'll probably also find someone there who will clean your clams for you. Here, too, there's room for you to park your RV.

The Clam Shell is an Alaskan lodge. It is not a fancy- schmancy place. But, it's a friendly place. It's where the locals meet in the morning to have coffee, read the paper, and catch up on local news. It's where the community celebrates birthdays, holidays, and memories of loved ones.

The Clam Shell restaurant is one of our favorites. We often go there for breakfast. Try the fresh baked biscuits and the homemade sausage gravy. For something Alaskan, try the stuffed hash browns. For lunch, you can't beat the hamburgers; they are hand formed and made from real ground beef. There's clam chowder, naturally. But, try Guy's chili -- but don't bother asking for his secret recipe.

The restaurant specials are truly special and you never know what they will be. Could be a tender T-bone steak dinner. Or Mexican plates with slow simmered chimichangas. Or Swiss Halibut Chardonnay made with Alaskan halibut. The Guy Lardo specials are something to look forward to.

Chances are that while at the Clam Shell you'll see the owner, Guy Baker. The Baker's bought the lodge in 2007. They've made a lot of improvements since then, doing a lot of cleaning, repairs, and upgrades. You'll also meet other folks from Clam Gulch who help out as cooks, waitresses, bartending, and general lodge hands.

Oh, yes, special events. Each year the Clam Shell hosts the Dead Fish Festivals. If that's not enough, there's also the Hippie Olympics.

For reservations at Baker's Clam Shell Lodge, the phone number is 907-262-4211.

From the parking lot of Baker's Clam Shell Lodge, you can see the world famous Clam Gulch clamming beach. You can also see the Mt. Redoubt, the volcano, in all her splendor.
